TAUG has finally released it's Spring 2020 semester theme. Our theme this semester is “Time.” What is the nature of time? How does time constrain or empower us? Why is time so crucial to the structure of the social world? We are currently accepting submissions for pieces exploring the topic of time. The deadline to submit a written and/or visual work is 2/14.
If you need some inspiration for your article, photo, artwork, etc., here are some questions to think about: 1.) Christianity teaches us that there is eternity. What does this truth reveal about time? What does it mean to live in light of eternity? 2.) How do we think about the past and the future in relation to the present? What does it mean to live in the now? 3.) What constraints or opportunities does time provide? What might this say about its nature? Is it real? Or is it merely a social construct? 4.) Is time moving in a certain direction? Does it have a tempo? A trajectory? 5.) In day to day conversation, we often hear phrases like: “Time goes by so fast;” “I need to kill time;” “Where did all the time go?” How does the way we talk about time in this way structure it’s conception? What might this say about the power of language? 6.) How are virtue and morality associated with time? (“patience is a virtue”; “living a fast life”) How are we conditioned to treat time? How do we know if our use of time is good? As a species, do we have enough time? Too much? Too little? 7.) Something about seasons/cycles (re: Ecclesiastes 3)? CS Lewis wrote on rhythm — “He gives them the seasons, each season so different yet every year the same, so that spring is always felt as a novelty yet always as the recurrence of an immemorial theme.” 8.) How can an infinite God design finite earthly time? Why do we believe that He is infinite?
